Description
This heirloom kale was originally brought to the West by Russian traders. Wavy gray-green leaves tinged with purple taste best when tender. Delicious cooked, or raw in salads.
Kale prefers rich, well-drained soil and plenty of water. Grows best in cool weather. In spring, start indoors six weeks before last frost and transplant two weeks before last frost. In fall, direct sow 2″ apart and thin to final spacing two months before first frost. Young leaves may be scissor-cut when about 4″ tall. Harvest no more than 1/3 of the plant at a time for continuous harvest.
Brassica oleracea
